Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA) Test

The test is 150 minutes long. There are 46 questions on the (RLA) portion of the test.

  • Passing Score:                          (145 - 164 )
  • GED College Ready:                  (165 - 174 )
  • GED College Ready + Credit:    (175 - 200)

Types of Questions:

1)      Multiple Choice- click on the correct answer from 4 choices

2)      Fill in the blank – type the answer in the box

3)      Drag and drop – move information across the computer screen

4)      Dropdown – select from menus embedded with text from screen

5)      Extended response – a well-developed and supported response to given information

  • Includes a 45 minutes extended essay
  • 10 minutes break
  • Text is 75% informational (non-fiction) and 25% literature fiction
  • Text is at career and college-readiness levels
  • Text is 400 – 900 words

Section 1 – includes all content (35 minutes)

Section 2 – includes extended response section (45 minutes)

Student Break (10 minutes)

Section 3 – includes all content (60 minutes)

Tests a student’s ability to do the following:

  1. Read closely, write clearly, and edit and understand written English
  2. Understand, interpret, and answer questions based on text
  3. Use evidence to support an argument
  4. Understand basic English skills at a level needed to succeed in college or on a job
