Well, you can work on your own.....if you get the appointment with the insurance companies.
But there is 4 problems:
1) Almost no company is going to appoint a agent without experience.
2) The few that can do it, will ask you for 500.000 to 1.000.000 in E&O insurance that without experience is going to be very difficult to get.
3) If you get any insurance company that insure you with E&O, it will cost you between $4.000 and $8.000 A YEAR.
4) I you get the E&O and the appointments with the companies...you will....at the time you start to TRY to write insurance....understand that you DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!!

Because it happens to me.
Advise: start working for someone else until you know the business.
