How to Get Your Florida Insurance License
The Trusted Student Guide — Legal Requirements, Steps, and Success Tips
Understanding Florida’s Rules
In Florida, only state-licensed and properly appointed agents can sell, solicit, or recommend insurance policies (Florida Statute 626.112). You need to be licensed to:
- Discuss benefits, terms, premiums, or rates of insurance policies
- Invite someone to contract or purchase insurance
- Give recommendations or advice on products
- Complete insurance applications
- Compare options, interpret coverages, or provide insurance guidance
To lawfully start your insurance career, you must be licensed by the Florida Department of Financial Services (FLDFS) and—except for agency licenses—appointed by a sponsoring company or individual.
All licenses require an appointment except for agency licenses.
Who is Eligible?
- U.S. citizens and legal aliens with authorized work status
- Applicants must present valid documentation with their application
Fingerprinting Requirements
Fingerprinting is mandatory for nearly every Florida insurance license. You’ll register through IdentoGO for LiveScan electronic submission. Florida residents visit a local center; out-of-state applicants can mail fingerprint cards if needed.
